On Sept. 14th 2010, there was a very tragic accident that unfortunately resulted in taking the life of a young Hilliard City School student named Cody Jewell. Cody was a remarkable young man, son, grandson, brother and friend.
Cody had a desire for education even though he didn’t have many educational models in his life outside the classroom. At the age of 10, just weeks prior to the accident, Cody had expressed to his mom that he wanted her to go to college because he knew she would get more out of her life with an education.
Cody understood such a large concept at such an early age; education was important and could provide endless opportunities. Cody will unfortunately not be able to continue his own educational journey but through this scholarship the hope is that many will be able to.
The scholarship was started by Mrs. Julie Caserta, a Hilliard City School teacher and first responder to the accident, in the fall of 2011 in memory of Cody. The scholarship is available to a graduating senior in each Hilliard High School. Each student receives $1000 to help toward college tuition. Currently the fund has awarded 15 Hilliard graduates!
